Levinsky market is located in South Tel-Aviv along Levinsky street, where hundreds of shops, stores, cafes and restaurants can be found. Shuk «Levisnky», the local market, was opened around 100 years ago by Jewish immigrants from Greek Thessaloniki, who settled mainly in fashionable Florentine district.
Local businesspersons immediately realized that food, spices and products, which Jewish Greeks were used to, would be in demand in motherland. Soon they were joined by Jews from Eastern countries – Turkey, Iran, Iraq and other Balkan countries. Each of them selling their unique products.
The shops were appearing rapidly and were in high demand. At least once a month, each housewife visited Shuk Levinsky to buy fresh spices, olives delivered from particular region and marinated special way, healing tincture and herbs, coffee and tea. Gentlemen used to buy here latest newspapers, while ladies bargained with sellers and shared gossips and news.
